New York Times real-time visualization of site structure

Delta is a visualization program built by Nik Hanselmann, a creative technologist in The Times’s Research and Development Lab

“The aim was to make a live view of the audience in a way that let us see the global behavior on the site. You can start to see some amazing patterns emerge from the data. For example: We can see how readers flow from the home page into the rest of the site. We can also see how readers flow from social media into the site, and how they aren’t necessarily coming to the same parts of the site as the readers from the home page. There are also lots of mini-behaviors, like readers bouncing around slide shows or the Real Estate section, going quickly through lots of photos or house listings. And we can see the “long tail” of The New York Times and its audience.”
