Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group selects PubFactory to host its journals

The Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group (JNSPG), the non-profit publication arm of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, has announced that beginning in Fall 2018, all JNSPG journals will launch on with a refreshed design and increased platform controls, enabling JNSPG to continuously improve reader experience. PubFactory’s customer support and full-service account management, coupled with continuous enhancements to an already dynamic platform, made them the logical choice for JNSPG.

Sheridan Acquires PubFactory Hosting Platform from O’Reilly Media

May 30, 2017 – Hunt Valley, MD – Announced today, Sheridan has acquired PubFactory, the industry-lauded online publishing platform for journals, books, and reference works, from O’Reilly Media. PubFactory will continue to be based out of Boston, MA, and will blend seamlessly into the Sheridan stable of publisher technology products and services.

The PubFactory team has been developing and delivering scholarly publishing technologies since 1999. In 2010, the PubFactory platform officially launched with the deployment of several major Oxford University Press products. This was quickly followed by the International Monetary Fund’s eLibrary and De Gruyter’s journals, books, and database products launching in 2011. Notable publishers including Bloomsbury Publishing, Brill, Edward Elgar Publishing, Harvard University Press, Peter Lang, and others have since joined the growing list of PubFactory customers. PubFactory Spring 2017 Spotlight

The beginning of 2017 has been fast-paced and productive for PubFactory with the development and delivery of numerous platform enhancements, several new partnerships with industry service providers, participation in global publishing conferences, and much more.

Platform Highlights

Many new features were added to PubFactory in Q1 2017. Below are some of the more significant updates completed.

User Interface Updates

Addition of new “Message Feed” widget.

  • Benefit:  This widget allows for a variety of updates ranging from a scheduled maintenance notice, to ‘Fact of the Day’ notices, or a regularly changing featured article/book link.

Login and registration improvements

  • Benefit: Improved user experience and addition of space for alternative methods of authentication. e.g. Facebook

Layout Engine

A new module within PubFactory’s Site Management Portal that allows for publishers to define how their website pages are laid out, e.g. one column design and “drag and drop” feature widgets.

  • Benefit:  Publishers can refresh the “look and feel” of their site or specific pages within their site as needed at no additional cost and with no PubFactory team intervention unless support is desired.

Access Management System (AMS)


Publishers now have the option of enabling a log of all changes made in the AMS, including identification of the user(s) that initiated any changes and the time/date stamp that the change was made.

  • Benefit: Complete history of AMS updates for record keeping and accountability.


  • Ability to customize platform notifications for Institutional Account Administrators.
  • Enhanced HTML Email Templates – The enhanced templates now support mixed Text/HTML messages, customization of ad inserts, and messaging for specific user groups.
    • Benefit: Improved communication between publishers and their subscribers regarding any platform updates or other “news”.

Support for JSON Web Tokens (JWT) as a new authentication mechanism.

  • Benefit:  JWT is similar to referring URL but much more secure.  With JWT the referring site creates an encrypted token that is added to the link to the PubFactory site.  PubFactory decrypts the link, makes sure that it specifies a valid account and subscription, and then allows the user access to the appropriate content.

As global privacy and data protection standards continue to become more stringent, security improvements are an ongoing investment for the PubFactory platform.


Fuzzy Search Enhancements

Added fuzzy search using the Damerau-Levenshtein algorithm which is geek for “good fuzzy”.

Automated filtering by editions and authenticated/unauthenticated access to specific editions.

  • Benefit: This update allows for a much better user experience.


Watermarking of image files with publisher customizable text.


COUNTER 5. COUNTER has released a proposed specification for a new COUNTER 5 set of reports.  This specification is a substantial change from the existing C4 reports.  On the one hand, they have greatly reduced the number of reports and have standardized the formatting across all reports but on the other hand have added a large number of filters which must be supported for each report which significantly increases the amount of data that needs to be supported to be able to generate the reports.

The timing for this update works out well for PubFactory and our publishers in that it aligns with our own reporting updates that will be completed this summer in plenty of time for the COUNTER 5 updates.

In the meantime, the PubFactory team is continuously engaged with COUNTER regarding the updated requirements coming in COUNTER 5.

INITIATIVE ON OPEN CITATIONS (I4OC). With the announcement yesterday on the Initiative on Open Citations (I4OC), we are very interested in hearing from publishers on how they feel about this.

Although this initiative does not necessarily imply any changes at the platform level, depending on how the initiative develops and publishers respond, we could reasonably implement supports for I40C in PubFactory by separating references from the full text and making them available with the abstract outside the subscriber paywall.


We have had a flurry of partnership announcements this quarter including with PaperHive, Kudos, and TrendMD – to access the full press releases click on the partner names.  This is a key effort to fulfill our commitment to ensuring that PubFactory is integrated with the latest tools in the scholarly community and that our publishers have the leading services in place to support their user communities, in particular their authors.


Michelle Norell attended Academic Publishing in Europe in January, London Book Fair in March, and UKSG last week.  She’s our intrepid road warrior and you will next see her along with many other PubFactory team members at the Society for Scholarly Publishing meeting in Boston at the end of May.

CHARLOTTE INITIATIVE .The Charlotte Initiative meeting – eBooks and the Academic Library – happened in early March and was the culmination of a two year Mellon grant on digital permanent acquisition and preservation of eBooks.  Tom Beyer participated on a panel on “Publisher strategies, reader tools, usability and more!” which proved to be quite illuminating.  You can view the video here.

Tom especially enjoyed the fact that Krista Coulson, University of Chicago Press, and he disagreed on just about everything in a nice way 🙂  I guess that’s why we haven’t yet gotten them onto PubFactory…

CXS EDITOR WEBINAR. And in the interest of sharing insights into new and creative things that our clients are doing with PubFactory, we hosted a webinar including OUP and De Gruyter presenting case studies on their usage of the platform’s CXS module.

For those who are not aware of what the CXS Editor module does, it is our answer for providing our publishers with fine-grained control over the HTML presentation of their content, readily adding third party service integrations, and establishing a more flexible production schedule.  You can view a recording of the webinar here.

Examples of CXS Editor in Action. Keeping up the momentum of using PubFactory to drive their business, De Gruyter has continued to update their site and has been making extensive use of the CXS Editor to customize content display as well as to add a number of new features to their platform including ORCiD links, RightsLink, and TrendMD support.

PUBLISHER FORUM. We will be presenting at the Publisher Forum in Berlin April 24th and 25th.  Tom Beyer and Christian Kohl will be running a workshop Tuesday afternoon on integrating Klopotek with a hosting platform.  A big round of thanks to Lauren Danahy from Brill and Diana Timm from Peter Lang for participating in this workshop.  If you are considering purchasing or integrating with Klopotek, this will be an invaluable opportunity to hear from publishers who have already completed or are currently in the process of completing deployment of Klopotek applications in conjunction with their PubFactory platform.

Society for Scholarly Publishing. We are looking forward to the SSP Annual Meeting at the end of May.  It will be held in Boston just a few blocks from our offices and as the conference draws nearer we will be in touch to schedule meetings and a tour of our offices for anyone that may be interested.

In addition, we are running a panel at the conference, “The Future of Content and its Containers”, which is a continuation of the discussion we had at the 2017 Charleston Library conference.  Big thanks to Ove Kahler from Brill for reprising his role from the last panel along with Will Schweitzer at AAAS and Tara Cataldo from University of Florida.
